Use Written Material When Training New Staff

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

Most jobs require that new employees remember a lot of new information. A common complaint from supervisors is that new hires ask a lot of questions. Any of us learning new job processes would require time and patience to get up to speed.

Communicate Key Information to Staff

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

We often receive solid coaching and instruction from our boss. We have a responsibility to transmit this knowledge to our staff.  Paul instructed Timothy and said, "The things which you have heard from me...teach others also." (2 Timothy 2:2, NASB)

Don’t Shortchange Customers

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

Even with the best intentions, we may shortchange a customer by quoting a wrong price, billing too much, using less material on a job than estimated, or making an error that our customer has to absorb. The Apostle Paul exhorted "that no man transgress and defraud his brother...because the Lord is the avenger in all these things." (1 Thessalonians 4:6, NASB)
If you received too much change, you would speak to the cashier and return the money, right?

When Hiring Staff, Outline Job Expectations

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

Jesus told the people what was expected of his followers, and "as a result...many of his disciples withdrew." (John 6:66, NASB)  Some followers of Jesus did not want to pay the price of following him.  Likewise, many employees may become disillusioned after starting a new job.

Be clear and concise when discussing on-the-job expectations including dress code, work behaviors, hours, and other work related issues.  Also, cover job performance standards including greeting customers, productivity, work hours and quality standards. Discuss any parts of the job that may be viewed undesirable. For example, if you expect variable weekend hours; work out an understanding in advance. Don’t sugar coat anything or resentment may follow when the reality sets in.

Reaching Goals

Often we set goals with great enthusiasm.  Perhaps we want to improve a web site, open a new location, create a product improvement or boost sales. Paul wrote, “So finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have.” (2 Corinthians 8:11, ESV)
