How to Communicate a Sense of Urgency

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

Frequently, businesses must execute with normal urgency while other times immediate attention is needed. I’ve learned through my experience that what I feel is an urgent matter may not be treated that way by somebody else.

Why I Don’t Give Investment Advice

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

At times people ask me for investment advice. Some are friends, others family, and some are people I don't know. I have learned not to give specific advice because free advice is often worth the price you pay for it. My initial response is to quote King Solomon: “But divide your investments among many places, for you do not know what risks might lie ahead.” (Ecclesiastes 11:2, NLT) I understand this to mean diversify your investments as much as possible. I may refer people to specific websites or other sources of information without providing investment specifics.

Waiting on the Lord

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

For most of us in business, waiting is something we don't like to do. We try to take advantage of every waking moment to execute some action that will move our business forward. After all, progress doesn’t happen until we follow through by putting action behind ideas.

However, part of any strategy requires that we follow a godly process in everything we do. We must discipline ourselves to wait on the Lord for his perfect timing and his confirmation of any actions we take. Waiting on the Lord can be a very difficult discipline, but very necessary.

Bad Investments

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

We all make bad decisions at times. One of the hardest things to do is to understand when to cut your losses. John the Baptist said, “The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire." (Luke 3:9, NIV) A tree planted for fruit gets watered, pruned, fertilized and cared for at great time and money expense to gain a producing fruit tree. A tree that fails to produce is cut down and wastes years of effort and money.  The temptation is to keep nurturing the tree another year or two in an effort to recoup the investment. Usually, it just results in more lost money.

Balancing Fear

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

Often I encounter people who can’t move forward because of fear. King Solomon provided guidance when he wrote, “The sluggard says, ‘There’s a lion outside! I'll be killed in the public square!’" (Proverbs 22:13, NIV) Even in those days it was unlikely that a lion would maul anyone in a public square.  Solomon also wrote, “Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good; haste makes mistakes.” (Proverbs 19:2, NLT)  The key to dealing with fear is to balance action with appropriate caution.
