Loving Your Work Is Not Enough

Often people contact me about wanting more business. They love what they do but are unable to generate enough money doing it. “Will” wanted to leave his $80,000 a year corporate job to start a full-time taxidermy business. I explained to Will that the average taxidermist made around $31,000, while higher end earners made close to $50,000. My understanding was that a master could make around $80,000. Will needed to reach the top of the taxidermy profession to earn his current salary. The top earners hit this income after many years of experience.  They represent those who were effective at marketing their services.

When I start working with a client I ask questions, lots of questions.  I do this to understand the client’s business, key issues as well as how the client approaches work. If I start offering advice before I understand the person, I risk misguiding my client.

Sending Emissaries

Sometimes you need to send a representative to set up a meeting, build a relationship or qualify a sales prospect. When you choose someone else, use the model from scripture to guide you. “Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them two and two ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come.” (Luke 10:1, NASB) When the Lord sent them, He provided detailed instructions about how to behave, what actions to take and how to evaluate each community they entered to minister. Act at Once

One of the most common mistakes in business is failing to understand when urgency is needed. A story in the Bible shares a situation when the disciples urgently needed Peter’s presence. “When the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, ‘Please come at once!’" (Acts 9:38, NIV)

When You Don’t Want to Hear Bad News

I work with a lot of business people, some who are open to candid objective views, others just want to be told whatever they are doing is great. In a sense it may compare to the days of Isaiah when he wrote, “They tell the seers, ‘Stop seeing visions!’ They tell the prophets, ‘Don't tell us what is right. Tell us nice things. Tell us lies.’” (Isaiah 30:10, NLT)
