Balancing Fear

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

Often I encounter people who can’t move forward because of fear. King Solomon provided guidance when he wrote, “The sluggard says, ‘There’s a lion outside! I'll be killed in the public square!’" (Proverbs 22:13, NIV) Even in those days it was unlikely that a lion would maul anyone in a public square.  Solomon also wrote, “Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good; haste makes mistakes.” (Proverbs 19:2, NLT)  The key to dealing with fear is to balance action with appropriate caution.

Loving Your Work Is Not Enough

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

Often people contact me about wanting more business. They love what they do but are unable to generate enough money doing it. “Will” wanted to leave his $80,000 a year corporate job to start a full-time taxidermy business. I explained to Will that the average taxidermist made around $31,000, while higher end earners made close to $50,000. My understanding was that a master could make around $80,000. Will needed to reach the top of the taxidermy profession to earn his current salary. The top earners hit this income after many years of experience.  They represent those who were effective at marketing their services.

What Works for Me May Not Work for You

When I start working with a client I ask questions, lots of questions.  I do this to understand the client’s business, key issues as well as how the client approaches work. If I start offering advice before I understand the person, I risk misguiding my client.

Sending Emissaries

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

Sometimes you need to send a representative to set up a meeting, build a relationship or qualify a sales prospect. When you choose someone else, use the model from scripture to guide you. “Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them two and two ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come.” (Luke 10:1, NASB) When the Lord sent them, He provided detailed instructions about how to behave, what actions to take and how to evaluate each community they entered to minister. (To read the full account, see Luke 10:1-16.) Follow his model by keeping these principles in mind.

Act at Once

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

One of the most common mistakes in business is failing to understand when urgency is needed. A story in the Bible shares a situation when the disciples urgently needed Peter’s presence. “When the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, ‘Please come at once!’" (Acts 9:38, NIV)
