The Good Old Days

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

As I grow older, I reminisce about how times always seemed better in the past. King Solomon understood this issue when he wrote, “Don't long for ‘the good old days.’ This is not wise.” (Ecclesiastes 7:10, NLT)

However, consider that toilet paper wasn’t invented until 1857, relatively recent in the history of man.

Richard Russell compiled a list of basic living conditions in 1904, conditions familiar to my grandparents. When one longs for the good old days consider these facts:

Ask Great Questions

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

When a small child asks me the why question, it usually begins an unending series of more why’s that easily annoys. I get frustrated with the why question because it isn’t a specific question; thus, doesn’t have a specific answer.

In our business, it is important to ask specific questions that will lead to obtaining the best answers quickly. It’s the same thing we learn from using Internet search engines. The more specific the question, the better the answer we receive.

Working When You Don’t Feel Like It

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

All of us have days when we don’t feel like going to work, making the next sales call or putting everything into your job. When faced with these moments we have a simple choice, take it easy or push forward.

To some degree perseverance is a choice. Thomas Edison, one of the greatest inventors in history, was often quoted as saying inventions were 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Edison was known for pushing and pushing and pushing to drive a concept into an invention that was usable.

Should I Hire a Personal Assistant?

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

In our businesses we tend to be very busy.  Many business owners work 45, 50 or 60 hours a week to get everything done. These time commitments add more stress to the multiple challenges we have accomplishing personal items.

One option that comes with some expense is to consider hiring a personal assistant.  A personal assistant can take care of many activities and release a busy business owner from tasks that can be delegated. When I consult with business clients, I work with them to understand what work that can be delegated to employees working a lower wage. Using the same principle, a business owner may be able to hire a personal assistant to take care of many routine life activities.

Accepting the Lord’s Closed Doors

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

I have always found the conversation between Balaam and his donkey in scripture, very interesting. I pick up the conversation here:

Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry and beat it with his staff. Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?”

Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.”
