Succession Planning: A Key to a Long-Term Legacy

The sudden death of McDonald's CEO Jim Cantalupo, and the naming of his successor within six hours, underscores that every business, large or small, must have a plan in place for the retirement or death of the leader. Ideally, a business' succession plan will allow the company to run smoothly in the event of the leader's unexpected departure. In most cases, that is far easier said than done.

Calculating the Cost of Getting Customers

A key issue for any business is determining the cost of acquiring customers. Taking the time to figure this cost is important for two reasons. First, understanding the cost of acquiring customers enables you to accurately evaluate your actual cost of doing business. Second, you can see which investments in sales are paying dividends, and which ones are not. Jesus said, “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost . . . ?” (Luke 14:28, NIV). Counting the cost of getting customers is important for any businessperson.

Every day, business leaders make hundreds of thousands of decisions. Some are minor, but others will affect the performance, and possibly even the very survival, of their businesses. Establishing an orderly process for making decisions, and ensuring that every employee understands and adheres to that process, will make a gigantic difference in your ability to beat your competitors in the marketplace. Just as the prophet Isaiah wrote, “Give us advice, make a decision” (Isaiah 16:3, NASB), effective decision making needs to be part of every business.

Bill and Becky operated a bakery and sandwich shop called Wholegrain Bakery. Customers lined up early each morning to purchase bagels, muffins, croissants, bread, and other goodies, but the bakery's highly profitable specialty items outstanding cakes and desserts didn't sell very well.
