Show your Enthusiasm to Customers

Many years ago I participated in a high school glee club.  The good part was that a multitude of voices overcame my ability to sing like a cow. A local television station wanted to highlight the group and asked them to perform three Christmas songs.  In the spirit of full disclosure, the program’s producer was the father of one of our members. When the producer came to watch part of a rehearsal, he thought the music was pretty good but he was clear about one thing: we needed to look like we were thoroughly enjoying ourselves.

This is also good counsel for interaction with customers as long as the situation is appropriate. For example, when a family comes to a funeral home to make arrangements; they don't want to be greeted with smiles and laughter.  However, when we step into other establishments; we want to be greeted with a smile and upbeat attitude.

I tend to be fairly serious.  Smiling at every opportunity doesn't come easily; I need to work on it. Placing natural disposition aside, I still need to display a happy, positive, upbeat attitude toward customers all the time. Likewise I encourage you to develop this attitude and insist your staff follow your example.

The prophet Zephaniah wrote, “The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing." (Zephaniah 3:17, NIV) This is a great word picture of how our Lord takes delight in His people by rejoicing and singing over us. We should “go and do likewise” with our customers.

Our singing group learned that enthusiasm and smiles can be taught and they improved our performance. You and your staff can learn the same.
