Apple’s Marketing Strategy: Should You Bite?Posted by: Steve Marr on Apr 25, 2012 Tagged in: Untagged

Apple produces creative technology. Apple is also a great marketer. Recently, Apple announced the new iPad3; however, there was no iPad3 at the announcement. Instead, Apple explained that the iPad3 would be coming in another 10 days. Apple is brilliant for creating hype for products you can’t buy. The price for the new product is $499. However, you can’t get one now. You have to wait, probably a minimum of two months.
Apple has many competitors for the iPad product line. The company freezes customers from buying other products by convincing the marketplace that waiting for an Apple is the right choice.
Most companies raise prices when launching a new, high demand product. Apple could likely get $699 today and lower the price as more became available. However, the risk is that customers might opt for lower cost options rather than pay the higher price. Apple is banking that customers will wait for the $499 iPad3. The lower price freezes them in line. They will wait rather than defect to other products. Apple fans want the latest version. Those who don’t have an iPad are willing to wait for the newest Apple version.
My advice to Apple users is to think of the iPad as a tool to increase productivity. I use my iPad for two purposes. First, I take notes when meeting with clients. Second, I use the iPad instead of my computer on shorter trips for internet, e-mail, and to log into my computer. I don’t need the new upgraded version to accomplish that.
An iPad is a tool. Think through what you need your tool to do. Most of us don’t need the updated models. A lower priced model or even a used model will accomplish what we need and save money as well. The technology guru may benefit from the latest version; most of us will not. The Lord told Isaiah, “But can the ax boast greater power than the person who uses it? (Isaiah 10:15, NLT)
A master carpenter uses saws and planes more effectively than I do. He can make good use of better tools. Likewise, unless you are a master of technology, stick with lower cost options. Save yourself some time. Don’t wait in line for the new Apple iPad3.
