Consistent Work Brings Results

We have heard the rhetorical question, how do you eat an elephant?  Of course the answer is one bite at a time.  That’s how Wycliffe Bible Translators tackled translating the Bible.  It has now been translated into 700 languages! This project has consumed 75 years and countless numbers of volunteers around the world.  Scripture tells us, “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it”. (Isaiah 55: 1, NIV)

The good news is that 5.7 billion people now have an opportunity to read Scripture in the language they know best. The bad news is that 1.5 billion individuals still are unable to read Scripture in their own language.

Seventy-five years ago the goal of translating the Bible into every conceivable language was so far out of reach only the most visionary would tackle the challenge. Today we don’t know the full results of this work, but we know God’s Word never comes back void.

Today’s Living Bible translates Proverbs 21:5 this way: “Steady plodding brings prosperity; hasty speculation brings poverty.”  In our lives we tend to push things along quickly and give up on long-term projects. I’m grateful that Wycliffe never gave up.  Because of their effort, I believe many will come to faith in Christ.  Long term commitment to ministry produces the best fruit and results. It is a model we need to follow in our personal lives as well.
