Cut Costs With A Trailer

Posted by: Steve Marr

Tagged in: Untagged

Fuel and vehicle costs are a burden to any small business. One opportunity to consider in reducing costs is to consider a trailer instead of a large truck for business. This is an opportunity for savings overlooked by many. Ruth was in need of food, “So she went out and began to glean in the fields behind the harvesters” (Ruth 2:3 NIV). She found an opportunity missed by others.

As gasoline prices continue to rise, along with the operating costs of trucks, we  should give some thought to other options that may work.

One florist maintained a van and a larger delivery truck. I asked them to think through how often they used the larger truck. Basically during Christmas, Easter, Mothers day and Valentines day were when the truck was used, maybe 20 days a year. I suggested selling the truck and buying a trailer that could handle the overflow while costing much less to own and operate. The savings amounted to $6,000 the first year, not bad.

A furniture store used a large delivery truck to deliver products to customers. Two or three times a week the truck was well used, other days very few items needed delivery. I suggested buying a trailer for the days when less space was needed. The savings on gas and operations were several thousand dollars the first year.  Pulling a lighter trailer with a smaller vehicle saved a lot of gas.

Think through the true needs you have, and determine if a trailer could be a cost effective solution. You can buy plenty of used equipment on Craig’s List or through advertisements. A good used trailer could be just the thing to boost your profits.
