• Do you treat company property well?

Jesus taught, "If you have not been faithful in the use of that which is another's, who will give you which is your own?" (Luke 16:12, NASB). Often we treat company property poorly. We need to realize that we have[…]

Producing Fruit Requires a Large Plant

I was bringing in spaghetti squash from my garden and reflecting on the amount of green plants spilling over my garden boxes. I thought about how it took so much plant to produce about 15 squash. When it is time to eat I think more about the squash than the green plant I picked it from. However, without a healthy green plant there’s no squash.

I thought about how plants are like a business.

First, I start with basic research and determine the correct type of squash to grow in my area since I only have so many growing days available.  The same is true in business.  It takes good research to know which business has a chance of thriving where.

Second, I ensure that the soil is ready by mixing in compost and preparing hills where I will plant my seeds. I thought about the connection to business.  We need to make sure that when we plant some new venture or method in our business, we have prepared fertile soil by identifying a customer need and filling that need.

Third, when the plants start to appear I may need to thin them out. I always plant more seeds than I need because they may not all sprout. Likewise in business not everything we try will work, so we need to plant more seeds than we think are necessary.

Fourth, I water the seeds carefully to encourage the young plants when they emerge. I need to use the correct amount of water at the right time of day.  I should water in the morning so the plant has time to dry and avoids developing mildew. In business we need to give attention at the right time, not just when we feel like tackling a job.

Fifth, as the plants develop I need to watch them very carefully, preferably each day. Disease or pests can develop very quickly and attack the plant in ways that will spoil the future harvest. The same is true in business. In most instances when we address problems quickly, we’re able to adjust. Fail to properly identify a problem and we may lose the harvest.

Sixth, we need to know the right time to pick the harvest. If we pick the fruit too quickly the quality drops because of immaturity; but if we let the fruit go too long, it could die on the vine. It’s not difficult to see this connection to business.  Timing is everything.

As I look at the big gardening picture, I recognize how much work goes into ensuring the healthy growth of the green part of the plant, the part I don’t eat. However, by focusing on this work; I get what I want, great spaghetti squash for fresh eating or stored through the winter.

The Lord spoke to Isaiah and said, “In that day—‘Sing about a fruitful vineyard:  I the Lord, watch over it; I water it continually. I guard it day and night so that no one may harm it.’” (Isaiah 27:2-3, NIV).  This is good counsel whether we garden or run a business.
