Selling Your Experience

I have been in business long enough to have considerable experience.  At times I need to compete with younger workers. Often younger workers demonstrate more energy, click through technology faster and are more up-to-date than I am. On the other hand, I have experience to sell.  I have been exposed to many thousands of business issues. I have a good understanding of what works effectively. For example, when an employee was promoted and failed to make the jump from great worker to good supervisor; I knew that it wouldn’t work to demote the employee and keep them.  A younger person may spout theory about how they could manage the person through a demotion. However, my experience tells me this rarely works successfully.

One reason I recommend that a businessperson set up a blog site is because those with less experience often don’t take this step. If they do, they lack the long term experience to demonstrate what they write about. I have years of examples and situations I am able to use in my blogs.

Somebody who has been in an industry for 20 years or longer is in a position to evaluate what is important in the field versus what is peripheral. They make mistakes at times, but most often the experience will give enough perspective for them to make accurate evaluations. They can blog on topics that are relevant to the field.  A younger person might not be able to identify why a particular article is important and why it is important.

 When older workers compete for business or a position, they need to understand the reality of the market by highlighting their strengths.  A prospective employer will look at younger workers and might believe they have more energy, are hungrier to succeed, will work more hours and they will get more work out of them.
The older job seeker needs to convey to an employer that they do not have to reinvent the wheel. They know how the real world works. They know when it is not necessary to rock the boat. They understand how to establish teamwork and work with decision makers.  In essence, they demonstrate how the system works.

In these situations you have to play experience against innovation, enthusiasm, and hustle. Paul wrote, “Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, nor malicious gossips, nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good.” (Titus 2:2-3, NASB) Use your experience and character traits when competing for work. They may be your best assets.
