Speaking Effectively

A number of times I’ve touched on the topic for effective speaking. At times, and I try to apply the lesson to myself, I shared individuals there’s a reason TED Talks are limited to 18 minutes, most listeners struggled to stay focused for much more than 20 or for a maximum 25 minutes. TED Talks are a collection of well presented speeches based on the premise of presenting ideas well worth spreading.


One tool that will improve public speaking is to watch 20 or 25 TED talks. After watching these you get an idea of the skills involved, don’t focus so much in content, which you may disagree, but focus on presentation and communication skills.

Many of us, myself included, have a tendency to use more words and talk longer than necessary to get our point across to an audience.  My experience is giving a presentation with fewer rather than more words is more difficult and challenging but well worth the effort. King Solomon wrote, “A truly wise person uses few words…” (Proverbs 17:27 NLT)
