Keeping Your Team Together

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

In the book of Romans Paul gave us a valuable lesson.  “Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who caused dissensions, and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned,  and turn away from them. For such a men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive hearts of the unsuspecting.” (Romans 16:17-18, NASB)

Learn from a Master

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

Often I will advise a client against opening a new business until they have apprenticed for at least one year and learned from a master in their field. If you want to open a bakery but have little experience in that field, you are setting yourself up for losing money and your business. You need to learn the basic aspects of the business first.

At times the client will ask me for some help with starting a business in a field with very little specific information available. One example was “Tom” who had an idea to provide massage services to corporate employees. The idea was to contact businesses and contract them to pay for their employees to receive a massage as a way to increase productivity while providing a nice fringe benefit to staff.

Avoid Becoming a Guidance Counselor

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

From time to time I encounter clients whose circumstances go beyond business issues and into personal counseling matters. I try to be clear with myself and my clients that I am not a counselor; I’m a business consultant and business coach. If I allow a client to move me outside my area of expertise into becoming a counselor, I am likely to do everybody a disservice.

Do Your Rules Have Teeth?

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

Any government rule or law without consistent enforcement and penalty is merely a suggestion. When I lived in Detroit, drivers on a certain section of freeway consistently went 10-15 miles per hour over the speed limit and at times considerably more. When traffic allowed you could cruise between 65 and 70 in a 55 mph zone without much concern of being stopped. Clearly the speed limit was more of a suggestion.

Following a New Model

Posted by Steve Marr in Untagged

Sometime ago I worked with a business owned by “Ann” and “Peter.” The key presenting issue was the effectiveness of their sales staff. Most of the selling was done by calling cold or very cool contacts. One of the results of our work together was creating a script format for cold calling. The script was designed by understanding and using information from the most successful salespeople. My idea was to take the information from the most successful sales people and teach the other salespeople to follow the same model. By using this model, less successful sales people increased their results.  I suggested that if a person wanted to deviate from it in the future, they should design a trial with 100 to 300 calls to see if it resulted in numbers that were better, worse or about the same.  Only validated feedback should alter the call scripts.
