The value of Tools

Posted by: Steve Marr

In any business we need tools to make our labor more productive. The prophet Isaiah heard from the Lord, “Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it, or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it?” (Isaiah 10:15 ESV)

Tools make us more productive. However, how well we use those tools makes a difference. Take the axe. I have split many cords of firewood over the years. Over time I learned to split faster and more efficiently. However a master could easily out produce me.

Likewise, we need to master our tools. In many ways I am not inclined to master all aspects of my computer.  Then again, the more I learn the more efficient I become. In the past I would call, or e-mail to set up appointments. Now I often use my outlook calendar, schedule a meeting, invite a colleague and the invitation goes out and is posted to my calendar. I can also see if the time is free on my colleague’s schedule. A small example of faster, easier and ultimately cheaper work.

All of us have one, or more tools we could learn to use more effectively. If you want to learn technology, consider placing an advertisement on Craig’s List, outline what training you need and invite a quote. With the high unemployment of many professionals are available at a low cost for a few hours work. Some features on my Droid phone I have not mastered, so I lose part of that benefit.

Additionally, consider the training you want to give staff. Perhaps a few minutes can give product updates or share how to better serve customers. The targeted investment of time, and, money on employee training can provide you with a high rate of return.
