UPS “No Left Turn” a Lesson in Great Management

Posted by: Steve Marr

United Parcel Service instituted a policy of not having drivers turn left. This was not a political statement, but a sound management decision.   You can view the U-Tube video on this link: http://bit.ly/ijpZdC  .

The reason is left turns creates more safety issues as more accidents happen turning left into traffic then just turning right. In addition time is saved by not waiting for traffic to clear. The savings? $20 million a year.

UPS uses computer mapping and systems to design the most efficient routes that result in the time and money saved.

I have recommended clients use GPS to aid sales people and delivery vehicles, as well as effectively plan routes in advance. Every five minutes wasted is costly.  In addition, at times GPS monitoring can help ensure vehicles are on track, where they should and need to be and if they are delayed beyond a planned time.

Part of the lesson for us is to look for seemingly small ways for improvement. Isaiah wrote, “Instead of bronze I will bring gold, and instead of iron I will bring silver; instead of wood, bronze, instead of stones, iron” (Isaiah 60:17 ESV).  The Lord was giving us a picture of improving each material. Likewise we need to be constantly looking at improvements we can make.

I would not have thought avoiding left turns would save $20 million, so I will redouble my efforts and look for the little things that make a difference.
