Use Airplane Time Productively

Posted by: Steve Marr

Tagged in: Untagged

While I have cut back on my traveling time significantly I have always attempted to use travel time effectively. When I had two to four hours to “kill,” I looked for something to do that's productive.

I prefer to take headphones that cancel noise when traveling. The sounds around me can be distracting and I attempt to shut out as many as possible. This allows me to stay focused on the task I have before me. When I block out distractions waiting in a terminal or flying on an aircraft, I've been able to write articles or other serious communication; something I can't do without my headphones.

Before I leave on a trip I create a to-do list for my time away and in the air. This list helps me stay focused and helps me avoid getting caught up in other activities.

I usually don’t login into the flight Wi-Fi system.  My experience is that it is easy to get caught up with new incoming emails or other news and fail to complete my work goals. Instead I draft answers to old emails that I haven’t had time to address and send them upon arrival.

When I don't have work to do on my laptop or iPad I read a business book or listen to a teaching tape to utilize the time. While on the plane I'm able to take notes for later action.  That’s easier to do than trying to take notes while driving down the freeway at 70 mph.

Paul instructed us to make “the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:16, ESV) Use all time effectively, including time spent on an airplane.
