Volunteer for Tough Assignments

One way to get noticed by your boss is to volunteer for jobs others may not want. We see an example from scripture. “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’" (Isaiah 6:8, NIV)

As we offer to extend ourselves we create opportunities to get noticed. One person, “Karen,” volunteered to organize a company picnic. While this took some work, and I’m sure she experienced a fair amount of grief, she did a bang up job. As a result, others noticed her. Over time she became an excellent manager. The first recollection I remember of her was the great job on the picnic.

“Matt” worked in an accounting department and was an excellent manager. Over time he got bored. One day he volunteered to take on a major department that needed help. He became an excellent manager and used his skills as a finance expert as well as a business manager. While the first move was a lateral move, he received several promotions as a result of the step.

Sometimes I ask those in sales to give me several of their most difficult and messy transactions. I explain that if you can demonstrate how you meet and conquer challenging work, you can use that leverage to get the rest of the business.

If you want leadership in a volunteer organization, take on the job no one wants and do that work well. You will get noticed and more interesting responsibilities will probably follow.

Engage in the hard challenges rather than run away from them.  It will build your reputation as a can-do colleague.
